Grupo Senzala was started in the 1960s by some young people who wanted to create a perfect capoeira style. In 1984 the increasingly popular group arranged its first meeting in Paris. Since then the now 48-year-old group has acquired an internationally famous name, and has spread itself around the world. It is thanks to Contra Mestre Chiquinho, a pupil of the Carioca Mestre Peixinho, one of the group??s founding members, that since January 2006 Budapest has been one of the Senzala group's centres.
Contra Mestre Chiquinho, 29, was born in Rio de Janeiro. Under the influence of his brother he began to play capoeira in 1990, as a pupil of Contra Mestre Zumbi. When Zumbi took the opportunity to go and teach in the USA, Chiquinho began to learn under Mestre Peixinho. Around the same time, he set up his own group in the Rio neighbourhood of Meier, where his pupils gained ever-higher belts. Many of them have been training with Chiquinho for around 10 years, and when he began preparing to move to Europe in 2006, his Brazilian group decided that they would continue training under him, as if by â??˶remote controlâ???.
Contra Mestre Chiquinho has been living and teaching in Budapest for the last year and a half, under the auspices of the Hungarian Capoeira Association. He gives his students a vital introduction to Brazil??s varied culture and music, in addition to training them in the martial art which is slowly taking over the world.
